RECAP:
All classes have now been shown how to access and use their digital notebooks to read chapters, view and complete homework, or watch videos associated with the units. This should make completing assignments easier as they can do them right in their notebook and not have to worry about printing, saving or emailing. It does require a computer, tablet or smartphone and internet access. If students don't have these things, they can just speak to me privately and I will provide paper copies. Students do have to move away from paper as the entire county is going digital.
Biology- In biology we finished up the notes over chemical bonds and I reviewed the types of chemical bonds. Ionic bonding is the complete transfer of valence electron(s) between atoms. A covalent bond, also called a molecular bond, is a chemical bond that involves the sharing of electron pairs between atoms. Polar covalent bonding is a type of chemical bond where a pair of electrons is unequally shared between two atoms. Metallic bond, force that holds atoms together in a metallic substance. Such a solid consists of closely packed atoms. In most cases, the outermost electron shell of each of the metal atoms overlaps with a large number of neighboring atoms. As a consequence, the valence electrons continually move from one atom to another We also introduced the four molecules of life; proteins, carbohydrates, nucleic acids and lipids. We will go over our lab today.
Earth Space Science- This class was a little behind due to the holiday so we finished the primer on using the computers to access the notebooks. It was a little frustrating that the homework was due today and 9 students asked for paper copies. In the future ASK FOR THESE BEFORE THE DUE date. I gave them copies, but the late policy of the class still applies. We began our discussion of the atmosphere and got all the way through it's compositions before the bell rang.
Intensive Reading- Our class has, admittedly, been floundering. We've been awaiting schedule changes and trying to keep busy. Yesterday was the end of that. I took all of the student's suggestions and set up digital notebooks for them as well. I pulled all new and different writing prompts from the ones the county uses, I developed a new grammar unit and timed readings to increase reading scores. Seniors who have not yet passed the FSA or ACT shared their serious concerns about how they felt they needed help. By the end of the day, I had a plan in place. Every student was given their test results after I analyzed them. They need to share those results with CSM George who has a program that will set up and print practices and tutorials to specifically target the areas they are weak in.We started by opening the new writing prompt: Is Change Something to be Feared or Embraced. For homework students were to read the two documents I provided on the writing prompts page of their notebook. Shut the Door. A Speech by Senator Ellison DuRant Smith and Fear of Change by Henery Ford. Students were told to only READ the articles. We will work on them in class. If students used the electronic version they can access the reader, and writing tools I added. Again, many students wanted paper copies.
Parents, OneNote has a parent link as well. If you want to know if your child is doing their work, email me, and I will give you your link. To re-iterate, in my class, students will have homework 2 to 3 nights each week. If you are not seeing them do homework, then they are not doing well in my class. For this week, students are being graded on the pages we create in OneNote as practice use of the tools and activities.
Intensive reading classes are shifting this week!
Students who correct ALL the mistakes on their returned papers will receive 10 points more. Make your corrections on a separate piece of paper and staple it to the actual paper, turn it in. Example: If you scored a 60 on an assignment and you correct ALL of the mistakes, I will add 10 points to make it a 70.
Entry Task/ Brain Bender:
It was a stormy summer evening. Granny Smith, Detective Shadow, the notorious gangster Sam Slug, and Miss Goodbody were standing in the lobby of the Soul Ace Hotel, all waiting for a cab. Suddenly the power went out leaving the lobby in complete darkness. There was the sound of a kiss followed by a punch. Moments later when the power came on, the elderly Granny Smith smiled since she thought Miss Goodbody had just belted Sam Slug, who was sporting a fresh black eye. Miss Goodbody thought Slug was a little strange because, instead of trying to kiss her, he must have tried to kiss Granny Smith or maybe even Shadow. Slug thought Shadow must have tried to kiss Miss Goodbody, and that she accidentally hit him instead. Only Shadow knew exactly what happened. Can you deduce what took place?
