Today's Quote:
RECAP:
Recovering from EOC and State testing, all classes will begin review of concepts practiced this year. This is the time for all cadets to get worked turned in, focus on the learning and lessons STILL taking place, and help prepare the school for summer break.
Entry Task/ Brain Bender:
How many times does the letter "F" appear in the statement below?
"FANNY FILINGER WAS OF THE IMPRESSION THAT EIGHTY-SIX YEARS OF HISTORY SHOW THAT SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH IS OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE IN EVERY CASE OF FUTURE GENERATIONS.

10th Grade Biology 1
Class Information and Syllabus
the yearly list of prefixes, roots, and suffixes.
Unit Essential Question: How does it all tie together?
Key Learning Statement: Science is the process of formulating hypotheses about the natural world around us and testing various theories with the goal of discovering plausible relationships going back through time. The Holy Grail of science is the attempt to discover some Grand unifying theory.
Curriculum Connections:
- SC.912.N.1.1 - Define a problem based on a specific body of knowledge, for example: biology, chemistry, physics, and earth/space science, and do the following: (CC Rating= 3) 1. pose questions about the natural world, 2. conduct systematic observations, 3. examine books and other sources of information to see what is already known, 4. review what is known in light of empirical evidence, 5. plan investigations, 6. use tools to gather, analyze, and interpret data (this includes the use of measurement in metric and other systems, and also the generation and interpretation of graphical representations of data, including data tables and graphs), 7. pose answers, explanations, or descriptions of events, 8. generate explanations that explicate or describe natural phenomena (inferences), 9. use appropriate evidence and reasoning to justify these explanations to others, communicate results of scientific investigations, and evaluate the merits of the explanations produced by others.
- SC.912.N.1.3 – Recognize that the strength or usefulness of a scientific claim is evaluated through scientific argumentation, which depends on critical and logical thinking, and the active consideration of alternative scientific explanations to explain the data presented. (CC Rating= 1)
- SC.912.N.1.6 – Describe how scientific inferences are drawn from scientific observations and provide examples from the content being studied. (CC Rating= 2)
- SC.912.L.15.1 – Explain how the scientific theory of evolution is supported by the fossil record, comparative anatomy, comparative embryology, biogeography, molecular biology, and observed evolutionary change. (CC Rating= 1)
- SC.912.L.15.13 – Describe the conditions required for natural selection, including: overproduction of offspring, inherited variation, and the struggle to survive, which result in differential reproductive success. (CC Rating= 2) SC.912.L.15.14 – Discuss mechanisms of evolutionary change other than natural selection such as genetic drift and gene flow. (CC Rating= 2)
- SC.912.L.15.15 – Describe how mutation and genetic recombination increase genetic variation. (CC Rating= 2)
- SC.912.L.15.4 – Describe how and why organisms are hierarchically classified and based on evolutionary relationships. (CC Rating= 2)
- SC.912.L.15.5 – Explain the reasons for changes in how organisms are classified. (CC Rating= 3)
- SC.912 L.15.6 – Discuss distinguishing characteristics of the domains and kingdoms of living organisms. (CC Rating= 3)
- IB Biology (2009)
- Topic 1, 4.1, 4.3, 5.4, 10.2
Agenda:
Opening Activity: Brain Bender, End of Year Review!
Engage: Creating the phylogenetic tree. What is needed to insure accuracy?
Explore: Group members cut out Caminicules(making sure to keep the numbers attached to the fossil) and discuss possible relationships and similarities. (Living record and fossil records must be kept separate)
Explain: Group presentations with analysis of how and why you inferred the patterns you did
Elaborate: Challenge question. Each group selects one challenge question.
Evaluate: Create your group claim, cite your evidence, and demonstrate your reasoning by defending your explanation.
