Today's Quote:

Recap:

Yesterday was a really fun day as we finally finished up the unit on Nature of Science and I gave the science classes the format they will use for the remainder of the year for writing their lab reports into their COWS. (See the photos below under general agenda.) I explained that their final lab report can be a minimum of 2 pages PRINTED and there is no maximum. Lab reports are due Thursday and Friday.

We then went over accuracy and precision. Students were told to watch these two videos online from home and take notes. They have been posted for almost two weeks. If students don't have computer access at home they are to let me know they need to come in during POWER HOUR. There is a unit test coming up next week AND any topic we have covered is fair game.

I made the decision to postpone our vocabulary test to Monday and Tuesday next week so everyone will have time to get into Quizlet. We then started reviewing how we will practice vocabulary today.

In English, we went over the test and reviewed our new vocabulary words. We then went to the computer lab to finish up going over Lexile reading level. Every one of my students has now been analyzed AND parents can request by e-mail, their child's information. It is important that students use the goal-setter in Total Reader, This can be accessed at home ANd should be! Students will only get better at reading IF they PRACTICE and challenge themselves.

Due to computer connectivity issues ongoing from the storm, we did not get the chance to finish covering main idea and author's purpose. I have come up with a temporary fix so we will do that today. Students should be well on their way to being ready to write their poem which will be due Monday and Tuesday of next week.

Students who correct ALL the mistakes on their returned papers will receive 10 points more. Make your corrections on a separate piece of paper and staple it to the actual paper, turn it in. Example: If you scored a 60 on an assignment and you correct ALL of the mistakes, I will add 10 points to make it a 60.

Entry Task/ Brain Bender:

While reading an article on slaughterhouses, Mrs. Shady fell asleep and dreamt she was a chicken on a large farm. She dreamt that a farmer caught her and put her neck on the chopping block. Just as his axe was descending, Mr. Shady walked into the room and touched the back of her neck to awaken her. The shock was so great she died instantly. Sam Sleuth doubts this story, why?

General Agenda:

I should have all PB&J reports today.
I should have all "Making an Impression paragraphs today."
I should have all, noun rules today.
I should be able to take a grade from Quizlet by 8pm tonight.

A lab report can be a minimum of two-pages long. There is no maximum limit
  1. In each section write as much as you need to communicate the steps in research you conducted to reach your conclusion.
  2. Spelling counts. So does writing in complete sentences, except when you are making a list of materials.
  3. Your hypothesis MUST be three things!
  4. YOU must conduct internet research into the topic of the lab and tell me three places you could share your research.
  5. Final lab reports must be hand printed in blue or black ink only OR You can choose to word process your report and then use a glue stick to glue it into your COW
  6. Your name and period MUST be on the outside of your COW (2 points off for every page I have to flip to find your name and period)

HS Intensive English

 Class Information and Syllabus

Unit Essential Question: What does a good writing sample look like?
Key Learning Statement: Writers structure their writing into several key steps to produce a good writing sample. While these steps are not always needed, it is best for beginning or aspiring writers to practice them to improve their writing ability. Those steps are brainstorming, outlining, pre writing (or rough drafting), peer editing, polishing and revising, and final editing.
