Monday & Tuesday, August 21st & 22nd, 2017 Happy Solar Eclipse Day!

Today's Quote:

Recap:

In all grade levels students were on the ball and turned in their homework to the proper drawer before the bell rang which shows me they did read the blog!

In class, we continued laying a strong foundation for a fantastic year. I spoke about failure and how I expect students to fail and they should be allowed to fail. I pointed out that in my entire career as a teacher and a researcher, I have learned more from my failed attempts than all of my successes combined. Parents,  failure will not kill your child, so let them fall down and get back up on their own. I did talk a little bit about my expectations and reminded the classes to be mature about the choices they make. For example, my class is a "flipped" class. Students must watch the videos and do the article readings at home to be successful. But what if they don't have internet access? I said that I would make myself available in the morning, during lunch, and after-school so they could come in and use the computers. If they are not will to get up that 15 minutes earlier or stay that 15 minutes later or go get their lunch and come to the room, then they are not prepared to be mature about an honors class and there is no shame in admitting this. They should speak to their guidance counselor now, and get a schedule change.

I also handed out the class syllabus and went over part of it. We will continue with class procedures and rules today.

Entry Task/ Brain Bender:

(This should be written in your agenda, everyday!)

Look over your notes and be prepared to tell the group something about the brain and how it learns.

Think about this:

What did both videos have in common (similar)

Why is it important to consider how people learn with being a student? When being a teacher?

From your past experiences, what do some teachers get right? What do they get wrong?

Should students have input on the learning process?

What do you have to bring to the partnership in order for this to be a successful year?

BEFORE THE FIRST BELL RINGS!

Biology 1:

Year at a Glance

Unit Essential Question:

How can understanding your learning profiles help you be more successful in school and beyond?
Key Learning Statement:
Our actions and reactions to the world are governed by brain chemistry and specific learning styles. When people are aware of their primary strengths, they can tailor their learning experiences to best help themselves. By knowing this information, I as a teacher can provide a more complete and beneficial learning experience.
