Recap:

Yesterday in class students in Biology turned in their Secret Life of the Cell worksheets and we began exploring the origins of the cell theory and the Endosymbiotic theory. Many students were fascinated by the structure of the cell and all of the organelles inside. This link will take you to a Quizlet to help you study them. First period planned out the door for Red Ribbon Week and will come back during Power Hour to finish it. We discussed how the cell contains so much more than cytoplasm as was originally thought. New data from research shows the presence of vast cytoskeleton highways the organelles use as an intracellular transport system. All students are reminded that tomorrow is the deadling for their science fair intent card to Mr. McCord if they plan to do a project. Since this has to be an original project with orignal data, I told my science classes that if they do a project and meet ALL of the requirements Mr. McCord has, they would earn a grade no lower than a "C" for this nine week grading period. The illustration below will help you visualize the cell membrane.
In Earth Space Science, we began our discussion of the formation of the universe and explored the timeline from the very first fraction of a second after the Big Bang to where most of the evidence says we are headed. This occurred approximately 13.7 billion years ago. While scientists originally thought the universe was about 13.7 billion years old there is new evidence pointing to a much older universe and the possibility that there may have been 12 big Bang incidents. We are about to explore how the planets formed, specifically Earth. We did a learing check and didn't do so well. I need my parents to make certain their children are studying and DO have homework 3 to 5 nights each week for my class.

In Intensive English students got a chance to practice their vocabulary words as we continued looking at different types of context clues. This week we are looking at direct explanation, a strategy where the author includes the actual meaing of the word following the use of the word in a sentence. I also had time to explain how one clause can refer to another one. Following our vocabulary practice session we began diving into our directed reading packet. Students in 7th period learned how we infer information from an image and how to use this data in writing. We will continue this next week.

Students who correct ALL the mistakes on their returned papers will receive 10 points more. Make your corrections on a separate piece of paper and staple it to the actual paper, turn it in. Example: If you scored a 60 on an assignment and you correct ALL of the mistakes, I will add 10 points to make it a 70.
