On an unseasonably warm Tuesday afternoon...
A crime was committed at Marion Military Academy. Mr. Cant A. Loop was enjoying a bottle of water in our cafeteria after working hard helping to pack up the carnival that had recently graced our campus. At approximately 2:00pm Mr. Loop was found deceased on the cafeteria floor. a head wound was evident and several garden tools were found scattered about the room.
Cadets who were interested in Forensic and law enforcement careers were called as well as the Marion County Sheriff's Office Forensics Field team. With our very own Scooby Squad in attendance, the three members of the MCSO presented a brief PowerPoint on evidence collection, crime scene techniques, and educational requirements for a job in the scientific part of criminalistics. Our students learned that the job requires a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree and many of the "soft skills" employers seek; The ability to be on time, perform a task with minimal supervision, and the ability to think creatively are critical to job success. A strong work ethic including the ability to be honest and reliable are definitely required. As Analyst Medina pointed out, "You have to be able to take responsibility and admit that you screwed up- and how you learned from the incident."
Students then had the opportunity to view data and evidence recovered from several local crime scenes.
If you can meet the educational and personal traits required for this job you can expect to be on call 24 hours a day, but usually end up working in shifts. Your salary will start at around $28,000 per year with health insurance and stipends for uniforms with a cap around $58,000 per year
